Lately i've been having some time management issues.. i'm worrying too much for my own good, there is too much i want to do but so little time. The worrying is eating at my concentration and strength to stay up. Also i haven't been drilling myself with learning ZBrush enough; i learn and experiment for a day....then a loong period of not touching it, i watch and read tutorials to familiarize myself with it again, then another long stretch of not touching it...and cycle continues. CARLYN, THIS IS SO NOT WORKING! *self-smack
So here i'm posting some pieces i've done really quick, in an hour plus or so (before class....).
The response i got for this one was especially surprising..especially since i did it in this style because i was running out of time. Some also thought this was a woodblock. It made me thought of creating my entire thesis project in this high contrast black-white style for a moment.
You should see more developments of this character series later on..i'm going to try to do as many as i can, MORE FINISHED, so i could mount them on a huge board for Spring Show. Also from my thesis project.
Been really bogged down with work..and worries (graduating!). And the awesomest Gnomon Masters Workshop, a 245USD worth spent--the most i have spent at a go, ever. Soo, to make up for the late one-two week update, here are some new pieces and some older work, all more of quickies than finished finished, save for the last.
One my my brightest, most saturated pc-sketch ever done..
And this is my Luvender, which won me Creature of the Week at conceptart.org.
Concept: The Luvender- The Love Ender Hidden in the darkest clouds, the Luvender listens out for the cries of those suffering from the aftermath of failed love. The mouths scattered all over the flesh of its body respond to the cries with a song of death that eases the human sorrows slowly but painlessly. In midst of the seemingly hypnotic state, the Luvender devours them, and with each life it consumes its ' petals ' flourishes, bringing it closer to its own wish to dissipate into its own death.
Just for fun..just thought i'd toss some of my tiny pixel work here. Meant to be in the much older generation game consoles (e.g. Game Boy) in 30x30 size restrictions, thus think the SQUARE SEXINESS of them.
...am so tired. Midterm was just the beginning...the real workload starts now.
Red panda sketches i did for Justin's thesis project. He sent me some of the references he got, and i did some quick marker studies based on the photos to loosen up and get a 'feel' for this cute animal.
Then..the orthographics, one standing, one on fours.
The top left is my first painting in the Head Painting class, followed by two more recent paintings done in the same class.
And these are my very first two portrait paintings from my Intro to Figure Painting class. Now that i look back at them, they look kinda..cartoony.
I've only taken two oil painting classes so far (one on-going), but they are already helping me tremendously as an artist.. While i've always poked in anatomy books and such, drew figures and faces in college before, painting just wasn't the same. It's taking everything i've learned to another level.. applying so many fundamentals at once, and observing and consciously working on subtleties that make so much difference. I've had the greatest honor of having the very kind and awesomest Henry Yan giving me a kick start to all these, and having Kevin as my classmate was lady luck at my door.. you have been a wonderful friend and mentor. THANK YOU ALL i must continue to improve!
So, my entry got into the final public poll for the Newborn Competition. Considering i've not posted this anywhere or told anyone else about it at all, i'm quite happy i'm getting votes from artists and others that got me this far into the competition. I didn't join to win and while it would be a great joy to (Intous 4!!), i am not expecting anything. My primary goal has already been fulfilled and i'm happy that i got it done the best i could and in time :)
I spent equal time on the concept and the illustrating itself, so i'm going to stick the concept of this piece in here despite the length. Here is what i wrote in the forums: My concept of my Newborn entry is based on the story of the 'Polong', a Malaysian folklore creature. In a nutshell, my Newborn is a creature created by a black magic practitioner formed out of a murderer's blood. The blood is put into a bottle and dark incantations are cited to bring forth its existence. After a period, crying sounds will be audible from the bottle, and the owner will then have to feed the Polong blood from his finger. The Polong will then be summoned for evil intentions by the Master.
Keywords for the design: - unseen ghost/invisible/never seen before could be very unreal and doesn't have to make sense, hence the smoky, ghostly effect - neither human nor demon, hence bits of animal parts, human parts, and plant parts - crying sounds, hence the tears - bird noises, hence the bird - accompanied by a Pelesit, that is said to resemble a cricket (drawn by the head). The Pelesit would burrow a hole into the victim, and the Polong would enter the hole. For the "razor sharp tail", i used the shape of a keris since it's very symbolic of the Malaysian culture. I also used the hilt of a keris at the claw.
Here on the left is one of the w.i.p.s for this piece, which has the first wash of color using oil paints (scanned in). For more info and w.i.p.s you could check my thread here!
Posting a sculpture here this time. Aveolae's her name, and she was first developed for the Dominance War competition.. wasn't happy with how she turned out there though :( But the base idea remains the same, and i did the simplified version of her on clay. It isn't finished actually..but after a long break home, it's a dried prune.
Big heeps.... and a toned down one in colors. One of my initial color sketch that i actually preferred more...
She will make an appearance in my thesis idea as well, not as a main but an NPC who players will learn to bribe and bargain with to obtain rare loot (like the best weapons, information for side quests etc).. i am looking forward to further develop her design but...the others call first.
I grew on the horse concept i did for the Nutcracker, & transported Winterleaf into the universe of my thesis project. His background story would obviously be different, & will be loosely based on the Hindu ritual of the 100 horse sacrifice, Winterleaf being the 100th horse that managed to escape the ordeal. This was rumored to bring the era of the Sound gods down... I need to find some way to summarize my thesis idea down so others can understand what i'm saying.....
Anyway, here are also some quick sketches i did in class based on the horse, forgot to post that in the previous entry. I omitted a couple of the sketches in there to fit them into one file..but you will probably see its variation when i get more into my thesis project :D
Some extra Nutcracker stuff. The original file..and the sepia version.
I have been wanting to add a horse creature on the last frame (before the title) of my Nutcracker clip, but i wasn't familiar with the horse's anatomy. Just when i wanted to get into it, it so happened that class was overviewing the equine anatomy and it was extremely helpful. A large large part of what i meant by 'helpful' is that it kept me focused.. no jumping into random things that interests me, no diving into my thesis ideas too much, etc.
The assignment was simple, but i wanted to drill the structure into my head so i bought and borrowed some books and did these sketches based on them. Then i did the primary concept for the creature, which is supposed to be just a concept sketch.... but i ran out of time (my own deadline so i don't get backlogged with other work)/energy and tossed that in. I did multiple layers actually, with Clara at the foreground, on a tall rock cliff with trees and other tree layers but it was too crowded for the eyes for that short duration.
The basic concept is that the horse is supposed to be the Nutcracker's steed, with his spirit and a collective of others' embedded within it.. the horse would act as one of the final-boss encounter that unravels more story of the game. If you haven't seen my Nutcracker project before, here it is!
I wanted to start my Summer break lazy with a trip to the zoo to see and do some sketching, but the crowd there, gosh! I had to return there another day. Then..i found myself sleeping. And sleeping, and sleeping, and sleeping. Could only stay awake for 1/6 of the day, i was feeling terribly lethargic... but the success with my first attempt on the Ginseng Chicken Soup helped restored some energy and i'm itching to do so many things at a time now. The tarots with Rez! If only i had more hands and a better spine grr.
Been meaning to post something a while now, but got a little busy with some thesis thoughts, poking back and forth to see the birth of Inked Radius, and refining some work. I should think about saving some progress to chuck in here...
Have been in the States since early 2008 and am currently a Visual Development major student at AAU, with an undergrad in 3D Animation, and junior to high school education in Science. Games got me started in seriously considering art as a career :)
